Symptoms of a Yeast Infection
(Candidiasis)
In this article we will explore the
different symptoms of a yeast infection. Note, however,
that every person is different. Not all people will have
the same or all of the symptoms.
Your friend may have had a yeast infection and had different
symptoms and signs than you. It all depends on the individual's
body and reactions.
Also note that if you have never had a yeast infection
before, you should consult with your doctor to make sure you
get a correct diagnosis. A yeast infection could be confused
with other infections and the last thing you want to do is
treat the wrong condition.

Symptoms of a Yeast Infection in Women
There are several common signs of a vaginal yeast
infection:
- Itching and Burning in the Genital Area - This is one
of the most unpleasant signs of an infection. The vagina
and vulva area itching/burning can sometimes get intense
and painful.
- Vaginal Discharge - A yeast infection is often
accompanied by a vaginal discharge. The discharge is often
white and clumpy and is often compared to ricotta or
cottage cheese. However, discharges that are thin, runny,
yellow or clear are not unheard of.
- White Coating on the Vagina
- Redness and Swelling of Vulvar Skin - The skin around
the vulva can become irritated and may also become dry and
flaky.
- Burning Feeling During Urination
- Pain During Intercourse - Enough said.
These are the most common and obvious yeast infection
symptoms. If you have any of these symptoms, you will usually
know it. It is not the most subtle of infections.
Symptoms of Yeast Infection in Men
Women are not the only ones that have to suffer from a yeast
infection. Men can have yeast infections too.
Just like women, men should also see a doctor if this is the
first time they think they have a yeast infection. It can be
confused with other ailments, so go and get a professional
opinion first.
A penile yeast infection is more common in uncircumcised men
since the foreskin can give the fungus a moist place to grow.
Male yeast infection symptoms are not unlike that of a
female:
- Irritation - The head of the penis can become red and
irritated.
- Itching on the Penis/Genital Area
- Rash in the Penis/Gential Area
- Burning Sensation During Urination
Can a yeast infection be passed between men and women?
I have read many different opinions on transmitting a yeast
infection during sexual intercourse. Some of these come from
reliable sources and some come from what appear to be
unreliable sources. There is alot of junk out here on the
internet (I'm sure I don't have to tell you that).
However, according to the Mayo Clinic (which I consider to
be a reliable source) it is possible for a male to get a
genital yeast infection if he has unprotected sex with a
partner who has a yeast infection. While sexual transmission of
yeast infections is uncommon, it is not at all impossible.
In fact, the UCLA Health System cites that approximately "12
- 15% of men will develop symptoms such as itching and rash on
the penis following sexual contact with an infected partner".
It is recommended that the partners do not have sexual contact
until all the signs and symptoms of a yeast infection are
gone.
